| Abstract: | This course will study European drama from the ancient Greeks through the
seventeenth century. It will examine the significance of theatrical works in
their own time and in our own culture and consciousness.
We will learn how the theatre creates art, and how the discipline of theatre
studies creates understanding. We will not simply analyze texts but consider
how to bring them to life. We will see how close reading of texts and the
interpretive methods of the liberal arts inform the decisions of directors. We
will help bring together the arts and humanities. |
